Yes — First Saturday Lime is 100% non-toxic and pet safe when used as directed. Unlike hydrated lime, which can cause skin and eye irritation, FSL has been specially formulated to be insoluble so it won't react with skin or fur. Dogs, cats, chickens, and children can roam treated areas freely.
First Saturday Lime works by dehydrating insects on contact — it clogs the spiracles (breathing pores) insects use to breathe, causing them to dry out. It also disrupts their life cycle by drying out eggs and larvae, breaking the breeding cycle before it starts. It creates an inhospitable environment for any pest with an exoskeleton.
Once a month is all it takes for continuous protection. Start in the spring to disrupt the pest growth cycle early in the season. Reapply after heavy rainfall to maintain your barrier. One 20 lb bag covers approximately 2,000 sq ft around a home.
First Saturday Lime is effective against ants, ticks, fleas, mites, lice, aphids, cockroaches, small hive beetles, slugs, and snails. It can also be applied to standing water (bird baths, troughs, water pans) to reduce algae and deter mosquitoes.
Sprinkle a ⅛ inch layer evenly across the coop bedding — on top of or underneath mats. This controls mites, reduces moisture buildup, eliminates ammonia odors, and can double as a dust bath for your flock. Apply in the run as well for full coverage.
